If you want to have a legal marriage the following legal requirements and formalities apply to all marriages in Sri Lanka.
Wedding ceremonies in Sri Lanka are conducted Monday to Sunday plus Public Holidays. The couple to be married must be 18 years of age and over on the day of performance of the ceremony of marriage. The minimum age is 18, as in most western countries.

You are required to be resident in Sri Lanka at least 5 days prior to your wedding. Therefore you are advised to be at the hotel at least 5 days before the wedding of which 3 days should be working days in Sri Lanka. Before finalizing the date of your arrival please check with us regarding public holidays. Three days is the minimum period required to attend to all official formalities.

Required documents to register a wedding in Sri Lanka


Documentation for wedding and marriage ceremony must be sent to us at least 4 weeks prior to the wedding day and includes: originals to be presented prior to the wedding day or on arrival to Sri Lanka

 

• Photocopy of birth certificate (couple) 


• Photocopy of the detail page of the valid passport (couple)


• Details of the names, addresses and occupations of the couple to be married


• Details of parents’ names, occupations and addresses of the wedding couple


• An affidavit confirming marital status of bride and groom prior to the wedding


• If either party to the marriage is divorced, a Decree Absolute proving the lawful termination of the previous marriage


• If widowed - Death Certificate/s of former spouse/s OR Previous marriage certificate/s


• If names have been changed prior to the wedding, legal proof of change of name


• If adopted – legal forms.


• If any document provided is not in English, then a translation from a legally recognized translator.

Marriage certificate in English or Other language


The Registrar of Marriages will provide an official marriage certificate in the local Singhalese language and need to be translated into English in order for it to be legally recognized in your own country. In most cases the Sinhala marriage certificate can be issued immediately, the English translation can take up to three days. If you like to have more than one certificate then please request this in advance and we will make necessary arrangements. And also you can obtain the attested certificate from the Ministry External Affairs at an additional cost.
